Mikayla Mitchell holds her son Judah in her apartment in Lexington, Kentucky, on Feb. 15, 2019. Judah’s father, and Mitchell’s now-ex boyfriend of four years, hasn’t met his son. Mitchell receives support from her family, but takes parenting Judah on her own. “I love being a mom,” she said. “I feel like it’s what I was meant to do. I love being a working mom.” She is an economics major at the University of Kentucky, taking an online class that allows her to receive credit while working full time as a legislative assistant for the Kentucky House of Representative’s minority leadership. Mitchell says she does miss the carefree college life and is concerned after the future of her classes due to the lack of online courses. Despite her challenges, she said, “I don’t mind doing this alone with Judah.”
