Thousands of protesters came together to protest police violence against black people, specifically the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, on May 31, 2020, in Lexington, Kentucky.
Taylor was shot eight times while asleep in her home in Louisville, Kentucky, after the police served a no-knock warrant. Floyd died after his arresting officer kneeled on his neck in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Floyd told the officer he could not breathe. Both were black and unarmed.
The protest in Lexington remained largely peaceful where similar protests around the country resulted in protesters, police officers and journalists being injured as well as wide-spread property damage. The country-wide protests were held during the COVID-19 pandemic.
